Featuring Attorney Gayle A. Reeves
DOES A CLIENT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE TO DIE? EUTHANASIA IN THE NETHERLANDS AND THE U.S.
As attorneys, we have been in a position to counsel our clients on end of life decision making. As individuals, we may have been in a position to watch a loved one’s life slowly slip away. What we do know is that there are those people who have decided that their suffering is unbearable, that the aging process has resulted in a loss of dignity and quality of life, or that existing in a state of advanced dementia is intolerable. This program will address the options that a person may have in ending her life. We start with the Netherlands because this was the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia. We will look at what other states are doing as far as creating laws in support of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Finally, we will review the laws of the State of Ohio to explore the rights of a person to choose to end their life in our own state.
